Back in 1997, the Eastside Culture Crawl began with 45 visual artsts in just three studio buildings in Vancouver’s Strathcona area. A few hundred people attended the event.
This year from November 20 to 23, the Eastside Culture Crawl will invite art lovers to visit more than 80 registered buildings. That’s up a whopping 25 percent from last year. More than 500 artists will be participating.
Last year, attendance exceeded 45,000.
“We are thrilled to welcome returning and new visitors to the 29th year of the Eastside Culture Crawl to experience the incredible breadth of artistic practice that happens right here, in the Eastside Arts District,” Eastside Arts Society artistic director Esther Rausenberg said in a news release announcing this year’s event.
“Vancouver is home to a growing number of artists who continue to create in the face of tremendous economic hardships and reduced access to studio space,” she added. “Their unwavering passion, ingenuity, and resourcefulness results in a richness of unique and diverse production and working artist spaces, creating exciting new opportunities for art lovers to explore, to discover, and to be inspired.”
The Crawl offers people an opportunity to visit artists’ studios and observe their processes. These artists work in a variety of areas, including painting, jewellerey, sculpture, furniture, leather goods, photography, glass works, and textiles.
In the meantime, the Crawl has launched its annual Take Flight fundraiser, which continues until November 4.
There are two components. People can purchase tickets for “Art Roulette”—and only 30 are available—for an art draw. Eastside Arts District artists have donated the pieces to help raise funds for the Crawl.
In addition, there’s a silent auction, which opened on October 25. It features items donated by community partners, such as a curator-led tour of the Vancouver Art Gallery and a three-night stay at The Ivy on Parker Guest House.
In advance of the 29th edition, the Crawl is also hosting the 2025 Preview Exhibition under the theme of “Passion, Reason, Idiocy”. This title was chosen to reflect artwork that speaks to artists’ emotional, rational, and foolish elements of their lived experiences as cultural workers.
From November 6 to 30, this exhibition will include juried works from 78 artists at three venues: Pendulum Gallery, The Cultch Gallery, and Alternative Creations Gallery.
