As part of this year’s Eastside Culture Crawl, tens of thousands of people will be visiting artists’ studios from today (November 20) through Sunday (November 23). But one event is being held over for an extra day—the Moving Art 2025 Unity film festival.
Curated by Kate MacDonald, Esther Rausenberg, and Sierra McTavish, the 12th annual Eastside Culture Crawl film and video exhibition features eight shorts by local artists. It’s open to the public at Vancouver Hack Space (1601 Venables Street).
“Unity explores the beauty of connections between people, ideas, and the natural world,” the Crawl’s program guide states. “From the intimate act of braiding hair to the intricate weaving of textiles, these works trace the ways in which individuality intertwines into collective creation. Artists this year draw together disparate strands: nature and a human voice, community and solitude, digital signal with analogue processes.”
These films all come together to remind viewers that “unity is not uniformity, but the rhythm of many parts moving as one”, according to the guide.
One of the films, “Hair Braiding—An Analog Cinemagraph”, was created with no digital technology.
“It was shot on 16mm film, developed by hand, and edited on an optical printer (though rendered on photoshop for this insta post),” artist Rashi Sethi states on Instagram. “I wanted to challenge the assumption that innovation in contemporary video art is confined to digital mediums, and emphasize that we can get creative with existing technology to make new images. @Cinevolution seemed to like this idea and generously funded this project.”
The festival also includes these short films:
- “Broomance” by Ethan White
- “Eroded Origins: Speak for Me!” by Garrett Andrew Chong
- “The Reincarnation of Puke Pixie” by Cheree Lang
- “The Thread that Binds Us” by Fatima Travassos
- “Critical Points of Contact 2022–2025” by Debra Gloeckle
- “Ghostly Spaces” by Isaac Forsland
- “echo / corpus” by Nisha Platzer
The Eastside Culture Crawl runs from 5 to 10 p.m. on Thursday (November 20) and Friday (November 21) and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday (November 22) and Sunday (November 23). For more information, visit the website.
