This weekend, the sights and sounds of the Philippines will be on display in Burnaby for free. This year’s Pinoy Festival runs from from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday (June 20) and Sunday (June 21) at Swangard Stadium (6100 Boundary Road) in Burnaby. Festival organizers will offer a free shuttle between Patterson Station and the stadium throughout the weekend.
The first event, Hataw Zumbayanan, is billed as the biggest Pinoy Zumba event. Dancers will groove to popular tunes from the Philippines—and you don’t have to be a pro to participate. Register for Hataw Zumbayanan on the Pinoy Festival website.
That will be followed by the Solidarity Parade at 10 a.m. on Saturday. A hundred different community groups will showcase the incredible diversity of the local Filipino diaspora. They trace their roots back to a country of more than 7,000 islands and 175 distinct native languages.
This year’s festival’s theme is “One World. One Goal. One Filipino Spirit.” Highlights a spotlight demonstration of the Filipino martial art of Arnis and World Cup Watch Parties in the Beer Garden.
There will also be a marketplace featuring designs by local artisans as well as interactive community booths. Pinoy Pride created one of them, Filipino Nipa Hut.
