近来，全球的博物馆掀起归还收藏品的反思浪潮，讨论台湾故宫文物定位的声音也不曾少过。 1930年代，因为中国与日本的战争，中国政府将历朝历代的宝物从北京故宫博物院迁到南方。后来，又再发生内战，蒋介石将数百箱文物以船运至台湾，并在 1965 年成立了「台北故宫博物院」。
