十八世紀的愛丁堡，把醫學教育從課堂搬到了病床邊。荷蘭萊頓大學的布爾哈夫先開了先例，愛丁堡把它制度化：系統化的解剖學教學、皇家醫院的臨床實習、學生跟著醫師一間一間「走病房」。這套訓練模式後來被多數醫學院效仿，也隨著大英帝國的宣教士們，擴散到世界各地。
