很多溫哥華居民並不知道某些鄰居正努力嘗試保留富有想像力的香港文化。這個曾經自由的港口城市孕育出以粵語為基礎的當代媒體、藝術和娛樂產業。然而，自從香港在1997年回歸中國以來，便一直經歷普通話殖民化，近年的打壓更日益嚴重，迫使數以百萬計的民眾上街抗議。這導致全國人民代表大會在2020年通過嚴苛的《香港國安法》，結束了承諾維持至2047年的高度自治。
