On YouTube, a Japanese concert pianist by the name of Cateen has attracted 1.34 million subscribers. To classical music enthusiasts, he’s also known as Hayato Sumino. The 28-year-old phenom has won rave reviews for his interpretations of pieces by Frédéric Chopin and other legendary composers.
On Saturday (May 4) evening, Sumino will be the guest soloist with the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra for All that Rhythm with Cateen! The orchestra’s season-ending concert will take place at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on UBC’s Point Grey campus.
The show will begin at 7 p.m. with the Vancouver College Wind Ensemble. That will be followed by a pre-concert talk at 7:30, with the concert commencing at 8 p.m.
Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra music director Ken Hsieh will conduct the program, which includes George Gershwin’s Concerto in F and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, Op. 45.
Sumino has experienced tremendous success as a young pianist. In 2017, he captured the gold medal at the International Chopin Competition in Asia. Then in 2018, the Tokyo-born musician won the Grand Prix at Japan’s 42nd PTNA Competition.
He followed that up with third prize at the Lyon International Piano Competition the following year.
Sumino garnered more international attention in 2021 by advancing to the semifinals of the XVIII International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw.
Cateen is also a music scholar
Sumino recorded his most recent album, Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 1, with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to his piano virtuosity, Sumino is also a scholar of music information processing. In 2020, he earned a master’s degree at the University of Tokyo and received the President’s Award.
Cateen performs 7 Levels of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” on YouTube.
