A Colombian vallenato singer, a Mexican pop and alternative rock singer-songwriter, and a Venezuelan songstress are three of the headliners at Carnval del Sol in Vancouver. Hosted by Latincouver, the fun-filled celebration of Latin American culture will be held in Jonathan Rogers Park (110 West 7th Avenue) from Friday (July 11) to Sunday (July 13).
Tickets are $25 for the Friday night opening event, the Vallenato Concert Party, which features Alejandro Palacio. The former lead singer of Binomio de Oro de América has also enjoyed a glorious solo career. But he is also famous for his starring role in the TV series Rafael Orozco, El Ídolo. Palacio also had meaty roles in Paro de mi corazón and Tierra de contores.
“With an emotional voice and magnetic stage presence, Alejandro promises an unforgettable night of rhythm, accordion, and Colombian pride,” the Carnaval del Sol website states.
For the rest of the weekend, tickets range from $12 for a one-day general admission pass and $25 for two-day general admission to attend the festival in Jonathan Rogers Park. There are also $55 three-day general admission tickets. In addition, Latincouver is offering VIP passes for $40 (one day) to $70 (two days) and $99 (three days), with kids and seniors admitted for free. There is a $35 ticket fee for the Colombian Parranda Fiesta (after-party).

Benny Ibarra and Lussilia will perform in Jonathan Rogers Park
Another big name from Latin America, Benny Ibarra, will perform on the main stage at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. Ibarra became well known in Mexico after he followed his mother and father’s footsteps into a musical and acting career. He made his mark with the band Timbiriche in the early 1980s. Since the early 1990s, Ibarra has had a stellar solo career, which he has periodically interrupted to reunite with his former bandmates. Moreover, Ibarra has also appeared in many TV shows, including 23 episodes of Sexo y otros secretos.
Over the weekend, the main stage will feature many other popular performers. They include Boogát, a hip-hop artist from Québec City; the Meni Axé Band and its axé and samba beats; Venezuelan singer-songwriter Lussilia; and Tobago reggae artist Caleb Hart.

Vancouver is also well-represented with the rock en Español band Tren al Sur and high-energy Brazilian music pioneers Sambacouver.
In addition, Latincouver will present a soccer plaza with street-style tournaments, the Chiquitzin Kids Plaza, and a food plaza offering tasty treats from more than a dozen countries.
