An award-winning comedy series set in Nunavut is one step closer to its second season. North of North will be production until April in advance of the unveiling of its next batch of episodes on APTN, CBC, and Netflix.
In its first season, North of North was a hit with audiences around the world. The lead character—a young Inuk woman named Siaja (Anna Lambe)—juggled single motherhood, co-parenting with her ex, a potential romance, an office job, and dealing with a mercurial mother. In the second season, Siaja will continue building her new life in the Arctic.
The characters live in a fictional, remote northern community called Ice Cove. Most of the filming took place in Iqaluit in the first season.
In addition to Lambe, the cast includes Maika Harper, Braeden Clarke, Jay Ryan, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Zorga Qaunaq, Bailey Poching, Nutaaq Doreen Simmonds, and Keira Cooper.
Last year, North of North debuted at No. 9 on Netflix’s global top 10 list for English-language series. It also cracked Netflix’s top 10 in 33 countries, according to the streaming service’s June 2025 engagement report.
Following its first season, the series won five Directors Guild of Canada Awards. They included Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Comedy Series, which went to Danis Goulet.
Authentic representation of life in the North
An Indigenous-owned production company, Red Marrow Media, is working with Northwood Entertainment as a production partner. Red Marrow Media co-founders Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril co-created the series and both are credited as executive producers. Northwood Entertainment founder Miranda de Pencier is also an executive producer.
The show has become a showpiece for Inuk fashion and music due to the co-founders’ determination to present their culture authentically.
“I think North of North did something special with supporting the local economy and local designers in creating the wardrobe for this show,” Lambe told Elle Canada. “I’m so happy for everyone, and it was just as special to have been the one wearing [these clothes].”
