One of Vancouver’s most distinguished editorial photographers will once again share his expertise in a West Side café. Alex Waterhouse-Hayward will speak at 4:30 p.m. on Friday (July 5) at the C41 Coffee Shop (2948 West 4th Avenue) in Kitsilano. The Western Magazine Awards Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award winner has chosen the theme “Editorial Photography Shown & Explained” for his PowerPoint presentation.
He likes doing his talks with PowerPoint because it enables him to place more than one image on the screen simultaneously.
“I am taking some of the best photographs in my life now,” Waterhouse-Hayward tells Pancouver by email. “My purpose is to inspire the younger photographers to develop a personal style. I believe it is the only way they might survive with the coming of AI. Besides I am a born teacher so I will have fun.”
Waterhouse-Hayward’s photographs have appeared in many publications. They’ve included the New York Times, Reader’s Digest, Vancouver magazine, Georgia Straight, Equity, Globe and Mail, and Vancouver Lifestyles Magazine.
Last October, the Buenos Aires–born photographer spoke to 1,000 people at a conference in Mexico City. Organizers placed 27 of his photographs in the plaza outside the event and he was interviewed by three radio stations.
In March, he delivered his first presentation at C41 Coffee Shop, where he discussed how visual art has inspired some of his photographs over the years.
Waterhouse-Hayward is also a prolific blogger. Read his posts at alexwaterhousehayward.com.
