Visual artist Jag Nagra released this artist statement in connection with her latest work: a large mural in Newton Athletic Park.
The mural is designed to integrate seamlessly into the park’s environment while delivering a vibrant experience. Each of the four facades features a minimal but lively colour palette, chosen to evoke warmth, joy, and a connection to nature and community.
On the East and West facades, stylized marigold flowers are the focal point. Marigolds, commonly associated with auspiciousness, positivity, and prosperity, hold deep symbolism in South Asian culture and are often used in festive settings for their rich orange and yellow tones. This nod to the South Asian community is intended to cultivate a sense of belonging and representation, highlighting the diversity that defines the Newton area.
The South facade celebrates the sports which are central to Newton Athletic Park’s identity. The design features dynamic imagery—a soccer cleat kicking a soccer ball, an elder riding a bicycle in traditional kurta pajama attire followed by the park’s walking track in the background, a tennis ball, a cricket bat striking a ball, and a basketball. These elements reflect the range of activities enjoyed by visitors and speak to the community’s intergenerational connection to the park.

On the North facade, I have created a flowing composition inspired by nature. This is an ode to the beauty of nature, adding a calming and serene quality that balances the vibrant energy of the park.
Each subject in the mural is purposefully bold and eye-catching, ensuring the design remains visible and engaging, even from a distance. By incorporating large, clear elements and a striking palette, my goal is to provide a visual experience that welcomes park-goers and reflects their community with authenticity and pride.
