Black Friday is all over the news today. But for many registered charities, an even more important day looms on December 2: Giving Tuesday.

The 92nd Street Y in New York City founded Giving Tuesday in 2012 to encourage generosity following the commercial blowouts of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

On this Giving Tuesday, we hope that you will consider donating to the Society of We Are Canadians Too.

I worked with the society’s staff—all immigrants to Canada—to launch Pancouver on November 8, 2022. We set out to advance education about underrepresented artists through original journalism.

Over the  past three years, we have posted more than 2,000 articles, including more than 300 in Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese. To promote inclusion, we have also published articles in Punjabi, Korean, and French.

We did it because arts and culture open up pathways to empathy. Artists help us see the world in different ways. They have been a bulwark against bigotry and us-and-them thinking for generations. They teach us about colonialism not only in Canada but from around the world.

Recently, Pancouver co-presented a panel discussion at the Vancouver Public Library to promote intergenerational bonds between first-generation immigrants and their Canadian-born children. We co-presented another panel discussion addressing how journalists with Chinese ancestry deal with identity and racism in the workplace.

Through Pancouver, we are countering systemic discrimination in arts and culture and the historic marginalization of underrepresented artists. We feel that this is especially important in an age of rising xenophobia.

If you value what we are doing, please consider supporting Pancouver with a donation to the Society of We Are Canadians Too. No amount is too small. Every act of generosity counts. Best of all, you will receive a tax credit if you donate from within Canada.

We would like to acknowledge that we are gathered on the traditional and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish Nation), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation). With this acknowledgement, we thank the Indigenous peoples who still live on and care for this land.
