This week, I stumbled across some amazing music videos by a Vancouver poet and hip-hop artist with an inspirational life story. YellowBunny is an Indigenous woman born and raised in Kamloops. As a child, she ended up in government care after her mother became a drug user.
YellowBunny also started using drugs in foster homes, but she found a pathway to recovery with the help of Secwepemc Family Services. YellowBunny’s mom is also clean now, and they are featured in RealWorld Media’s new documentary series, The Conversation. Pancouver recently interviewed the host, Dr. Evan Adams, for an article about Indigenous people who’ve turned their lives around. The piece concludes with YellowBunny’s official music video for “An Autumn Love Story”.
YellowBunny shares visceral stories with vivid verses in many of her songs. By breaking down the stigma surrounding addiction, she hopes to help others struggling in their own lives.
A prime example is her bold music video for “Pressure Part.2”, which was recorded at Leeside Skatepark in East Vancouver. YellowBunny wrote, directed, and performed this work. Mixing and mastering is by mixedbybrandon; splashgvng created the beat; and yannieboi edited the video. Check it out below.
